Stand out from the crowd with a crown-emb...

Your ideas are very clever and well-conceived; how did you come up with the concepts?
I tried to collect lots of reference material from the cities, important and iconic buildings, statues, food, design, etcetera and then looked at them all together and scribbled down some ideas. For me the inspiration comes by working, during the process. I just have to get the first line on the paper, which is more complicated than you would think sometimes!
What are your processes from idea to finished piece?
I do quick thumbnail sketches first, the first ideas that come into my head. Then I take out the ones that are not likely to work or that might be too complicated to understand, send the rest and wait for feedback from the client. Based on the feedback I do some changes, completely new sketches if the first ones didn’t work out, or I get the green light to proceed to the final. After I think the final artwork is finished I send it in and hope that everybody likes it. If not I’ll do some adjustments. Some covers were more of a struggle; some were really straightforward from start to finish.
Which cover illustration are you most pleased with?
I’m happy with all of them, they turned out great, but if I have to choose one I would say the Portugal cover. I like how the bright red colour really pops out from the cover.
How was the SHOP brief different to other briefs you have completed?
The brief was to use visual landmarks or cultural objects from each city in a clever and fun way and get all that in to the shopping context. It was really challenging to come up with something both clever and beautiful that was not too obvious nor too complicated to understand. I really enjoyed generating the ideas and finding the right balance of beautiful and clever.
Which is your favourite city in the world?
New York to visit. It gives you lots of energy and inspiration every time you visit; I love sitting and observing people on the street corners. To live, I would say Barcelona. It’s more relaxed than New York but still stimulating creatively; there are lots of things going on all the time. The sun and great food don’t hurt, either.
