SHOP cover illustrator: Brett Ryder

SHOP’s picture editor Dorcas Brown talks to Brighton-based Brett Ryder about his cover illustrations for SHOP magazine’s spring/summer 2011 editions

What was your inspiration when creating the illustrations for SHOP magazine?

When approaching this project of nine covers I wanted to keep them uniform in some way, with a thread that would continue through the set, so I gave myself a basic rule of one fashion product to one location reference. I did deviate from this rule but it helped the idea process and also helped focus the mind, as the options could have been pretty endless due to the rich subject matter.

Do you have a creative process you follow from idea to finished piece?

I research the subject, make a list of relevant points, then try and mix them together to come up with an interesting concept. Next I produce a couple of sketches in the hope that one will be liked enough to move forward. My sketches are very loose; this saves time if they are rejected but also means a leap of faith by the designers to trust me in creating the final image, which is a combination of collage, drawing and Photoshop work.

Which of the cover illustrations you created for SHOP magazine are you most pleased with?

I think Switzerland.

You are a prolific illustrator and have worked on some great projects. How was the SHOP magazine brief different to other briefs you have completed?

Due to the number of covers I had to keep continuity in mind. Also, I rarely get the opportunity to illustrate fashion, so that was a very enjoyable aspect of the brief.

Which is your favourite city in the world?

My favourite place is Amalfi and the Amalfi coast. I love Italy, maybe because I went to a school attended by lots of Italians and their families were always lovely, friendly and usually loud. It was where I had my honeymoon and it is just a very beautiful place with beautiful food, sun, vistas … I could go on!
