Aida Pekin ‘Galata Tower and Hezârfen’ pin
One of Istanbul’s favourite legends is the story of Hezârfen Ahmed Çelebi, a 17th-century Ottoman engineer who put on eagle wings, jumped from the top of Galata Tower and flew across the Bosphorus. At Aida Pekin’s boutique in the modern neighbourhood of Galata, which sells the designer’s handmade jewellery, is a charming rendition of this tale: a silver pin depicting the iconic tower and Çelebi, connected with a coil of coloured wire. The pin, which is also available as a necklace, is part of a collection Pekin has devoted to distinctly Istanbul images.
