City Guide

Handmade in Milan: city guide

Italy is a country of skilful craftsmen that excel at combining tradition with innovation; Milan is not short of examples and the Italian capital of style is a great place to shop for handmade treasures

Pellini

The women of the Pellini family have been making jewellery for three generations: their story began in Milan in 1947 and since then their handmade creations have travelled all over the world. There are four Pellini stores, three in Milan and one in Paris; the outlet on Via Manzoni only stocks unique, one-off creations, while the showroom on Via Morigi offers a vast selection and also houses the company archives.

Zoraide

There’s something special about Zoraide’s handmade shoes: crafted in Italy by experienced artisans, they are about timeless luxury rather than trends. The Zoraide brand evolved from a bespoke shoemaking workshop and even though it is a recent launch, it has already attracted stars such as Nicole Kidman and been specially commissioned to create footwear for Broadway. The entire collection can be viewed exclusively in Zoraide’s Milan showroom.

Savini

Virgilio Savini took over the bar inside Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emmanuele in 1881, while the Belle Epoque was flourishing, and transformed it into a luxurious venue where the city’s literati flocked to eat and drink. Since then, Savini has been a meeting point for writers, actors, artists and politicians from Maria Callas to Charlie Chaplin. Totally refurbished in 2008, Savini is now home to one of Milan’s most acclaimed pastry shops, a bar and a restaurant as well as a deli offering a wide selection of excellent Italian products under the Savini brand.

Griffe

Griffe was founded in Milan in 1936 as Vetrerie di Empoli and was originally a small shop that sold speciality glasses and tableware. Since then, this little showroom has evolved into a sophisticated international glassmaking brand with admirers all across the world. Griffe’s style is opulent; during the Christmas period a whole room is dedicated to seasonal glass decorations.

Grom

Ice cream was invented in Italy but until a few years ago, finding a true artisanal gelato in an Italian city was no mean feat. Grom was founded by two visionary entrepreneurs who offered the first truly fresh and natural gelato. Grom’s organic ice creams, freshly prepared every day, are now available in 34 Italian cities and the brand has five more stores in cities from Tokyo to New York.
