Where were you born?
A small town near Munich.
Where do you live?
In Schwabing.
What's best about your neighbourhood?
Schwabing is the former artists’ quarter of Munich. Today it is a modern, lively quarter with many students, young families, bars and small shops. Yet, there are lots of quiet living areas with adorable Art Nouveau buildings, which I like most.
If money was no object, where would you live?
Lisbon, Munich, Paris and London.
Which is your favourite Munich neighbourhood?
The area around Wiener Platz and Johannisplatz in Haidhausen has the best beer garden and is the quarter with the best vibe. Bavarian tradition and modernity co-exist to create a relaxed atmosphere.
Which are your favourite Munich stores?
Harvest for the great menswear, innovative shop concept and great collaborations. I loved the leather camera gear in collaboration with Leica and A Kind of Guise. Vintage Love is great too, the luxury vintage rental in the cellar is heaven for stylists.
And your favourite restaurants?
Fei Scho – a new, small Tokyo-style Asian restaurant in the Glockenbach quarter; absolutely the best atmosphere before going out, best dim sum and best spare ribs I have eaten so far. I love to spend the evening or sunny Sundays at Georgenhof just around the corner from my flat; great regional Bavarian food, good alcohol and unpretentious atmosphere. Charlie restaurant and club; they were daring enough to open a scene hotspot in a new area, which can be difficult in Munich.
Can you recommend any local dishes to try?
Get fresh obatzda (Bavarian cheese spread) from the Viktualienmarkt (food market) and eat it with pretzels and beer for breakfast.
Do you have a favourite local café or pub?
I like to hang out at Bar Corso, a meeting point for the local scene.
Where do you take out-of-town friends?
Probably to the river surf spot in the Englischer Garten and to the Bob Beaman club in the evening.
Where do you like to celebrate?
Schumann’s Bar. It is pure style; the old-school art of bartending with great food and an impressive location.
Do you have a favourite Munich walk?
I love to walk through the more central part of the Bogenhausen quarter and look at the great old mansions with huge gardens there. I have a weakness for all kinds of old mansions, even the creepy ones.
How do you like to travel around the city?
Bike!
Which are the city’s best landmarks?
Königsplatz and Odeonsplatz, period.
Which do you think is Munich’s best museum?
I like Haus der Kunst best, but that is very subjective. The changing exhibitions reflect the Zeitgeist and I like the building.
Where are the best bargains to be found?
Munich is not really a city of bargains, yet there is a small vintage store, Alexa’s, where you could probably get a good bargain on a great vintage piece.
Any advice for visitors?
Don’t just hang out on the main shopping street, turn right or left to the city’s more original quarters. The good thing is that everything is so close to the centre in Munich. For example, Schwabing and Glockenbach have great shops and coffee places. Go to Robinson’s Bar on Corneliusstrasse in the evening if you want to get to know new people and party hard.
Can you recommend any good hotels?
The Mandarin Oriental, if you can afford it. If not, try the Lux.
What can’t you live without?
Sad but true: iPhone and MacBook
