SHOP: HALTBAR
Munich’s premiere concept store presents an exquisite selection of aesthetically rewarding accessories by international designers, along with men’s and women’s clothing made in-house. As a showcase for pieces by the celebrated Belgian fashion designer Ann Demeulemeester, Haltbar is on par with top-tier luxury boutiques. Don’t overlook the rest of the artfully curated and displayed stock, which includes a wide range of designs by Paris-based Natalia Brilli. One of her generation’s most compelling accessory designers, Brilli creates unique pieces by covering unremarkable items such as imitation Rolex watches, chunky chains and credit cards in elegant glove leather. Everything on offer here makes a statement that is subtle yet stylish.

DO: SODA
The coolest shops provide inspiration for both the intellect and the eye. Well-appointed modern bookshops such as Soda do multiple service as concept stores, galleries and trend predictors. Soda stocks only the best indie art and fashion magazines, along with a few discerningly chosen coffee-table books about typography, graffiti, photography, graphic design and fashion. These are displayed like works of art, while the magazines are thoughtfully grouped according to their mission and market. Thankfully, the staff are sensitive to browsers’ needs to flip through the pages. It would be easy lose entire days in this small, white, wonderfully calming shop.

SEE: GALERIE ARTEFAKT
The craft sensibilities evident in Galerie Artefakt’s own range of rainbow-bright dresses, jackets and wraps, made from boiled wool, organza and silk, suggest a clientele with artistic inclinations. The store’s jewellery range is a broad selection of innovative pieces from top designers in Germany, Holland, South Africa and elsewhere. Delicate strands of metal interlaced with beads and wire are true museum-piece quality, created by TK, the 60-something designer whose work revitalised Munich’s jewellery scene. Other pieces in the store include some stunning materials and styles which challenge the conventions of jewellery design, yet are also elegant and wearable.
