Berlin’s lingerie surprises

The women of Berlin are widely admired for their pragmatic style and intellectual allure. Natural beauty is common and cherished in this artistically driven city, where fussiness is frowned upon. Yet under their layers of chic winterwear, Berliners love lingerie – especially by the city’s innovative and unique local labels, which offer excellent quality and inspiring style

Blush Berlin

Claudia Kleinert, the designer and founder of Blush Berlin, has a profound admiration for Berlin women’s special blend of fortitude and femininity. Kleinert’s 10-year old label is among Berlin’s signature brands. Her collections are seasonal, small and consistently elegant, with an emphasis on comfort and sensual fabrics. Cuts hint at a vintage French boudoir aesthetic from the 70s; Kleinert forgoes vulgarity or frivolity in favour of elegance. Blush recently added a line of ruffled silk robes that are lovely enough to wear as classic wrap dresses.

Très Bonjour

Lady-like latex seems like a contradiction until you see Viola Jaeger and Sandra Dresp’s Très Bonjour boutique in Berlin. Located down the street from the exclusive Soho House social club, Très Bonjour is a saucy blend of elegance and eroticism. The candy-coloured, supple, soft latex undergarments, dresses and accessories are exceptionally comfortable and playful. International celebrities such as Katy Perry have been seen in Très Bonjour’s irreverently pretty designs and accessories, while a trompe-l’œil latex necklace resembling a lace bow-tie has become an everyday favourite among fashionable Berliners.

Wundervoll

Luxury lingerie label Wundervoll epitomises pure, mature sexiness, combining sophisticated sensuality with ethical manufacturing to create pieces that every woman will covet. The Berlin-based brand’s ‘retro-futuristic’ collections are inspired by Art-Deco details such as sunburst seaming on bras and high-waisted briefs. The label is also a pioneer in the use of eco-friendly, organic cotton and silk. The label’s founder Matthias Jaschke maintains a restrained, muted, palette which flatters skin and highlights the delicate details of his designs.

Fishbelly

Fishbelly may seem an odd name for German designer Jutta Teschner’s exclusive lingerie label. Yet her shimmering details, slinky shapes and fluid fabrics could suit a mermaid equally as well as a stylish Berliner. Her accessible animal print, gold lace and jewel-toned creations are closer to other international lingerie labels than the understated elegance or avant-garde allure of Berlin’s other leading labels, but Teschner still acknowledges Berlin as her muse.

Revanche de la Femme

Designer Elena Krebs seductively revives the past at Revanche de la Femme, her high-end corset boutique. Krebs outfits the city’s celebrated burlesque scene, as well as providing sophisticated non-entertainers with artfully crafted corsets for ballrooms and boudoirs; her brocade and silk corsets sculpt figures, worn under or over dresses. Her emphasis is firmly on flattering figures and adding an old-world glamour to contemporary dress.
